In a Nutshell...
Negroponte Resort Eretria is located on Euboea island in a graphic coastal area 2,5km from the city of Eretria and its archaeological treasures, 19km from the city of Halkida and just 100km from the International Airport Eleftherios Vezinelos in Athens. Negroponte was the Venetian name of Halkida.
The Resort’s facilities stretch for as far as 25.000 m2 acres along the Euboean coastline and include the hotel accommodation with restaurants and bars, organized conference rooms, playgrounds, swimming pools, gyms, football pitches, basketball and tennis courts, beach volleyball and a lot more.

Our Name…
In 1204, with the capture of Constantinople by the Crusaders, Euboea was given as a prize to the Flemish knight Jacques d’Avesnes for a short time, as it was later divided into three parts, each given to Lombard knights of the Delle Carceri and Percorari families. These were the so-called tritemorians. The years of the Frankish occupation were years of prosperity for the barony of Chalkis, both because of the developed trade, as well as from the processing of purple and the operation of the Venetian banking institutions.
During these years until 1470, when the city passed to the Turks, it remained in the hands of its Venetian masters. Initially Negroponte was the name of the town of Chalkida and later this name prevailed for the whole island of Euboea.
There are two possible explanations for the name Negroponte:
When Chalkida was under Venetian administration, a bridge was built to connect the city and the island of Evia with Central Greece. The bridge was made of wood, but enough iron was used to make it look black. Thus the town was named Black Bridge after the Catalan Negro (in earlier times, Central Greece had been conquered by the Catalans) and the Italian Ponte.
